Medicare Advantage Plan Leaving Your Area in 2027? What to Do Next
If your Medicare Advantage plan is leaving your area in 2027, your Medicare coverage is not ending.
It means your current Medicare Advantage plan will no longer be available where you live, and you’ll need to review your options for 2027.
The key is to avoid waiting until the last minute.
Why Would a Medicare Advantage Plan Leave Your Area?
Medicare Advantage plans are offered by private insurance companies. Each year, those companies decide which plans and service areas they will continue to offer.
A plan may leave certain counties, reduce its service area, or stop offering the plan altogether. To enroll in a Medicare Advantage plan, you generally must live within that plan’s service area.
If your plan will not be available in 2027, you should receive a notice explaining the change.
What Happens to Your Medicare Coverage?
You still have Medicare.
Depending on your situation, you may be able to:
- Choose another Medicare Advantage plan
- Return to Original Medicare
- Add a stand-alone Part D prescription drug plan
- Consider Medicare Supplement coverage if you qualify
If your Medicare Advantage plan is not renewed and you don’t choose another Medicare Advantage plan before your coverage ends, Medicare says you’ll generally be returned to Original Medicare.
You May Get Extra Time to Choose a Plan
If your Medicare Advantage plan’s contract is not renewed, you may qualify for a Special Enrollment Period.
For a plan that is not renewed for the following year, Medicare currently provides a Special Enrollment Period from December 8 through the last day of February of the following year.
Even with the extra time, reviewing your options early can help prevent coverage surprises.
Check Your Doctors
Before choosing a new Medicare Advantage plan, check whether your important providers participate in the new plan’s network.
That includes your:
- Primary care doctor
- Specialists
- Preferred hospital
- Medical facilities
Don’t assume a doctor who accepts your current Medicare Advantage plan will accept a different one.
Check Your Prescriptions
Prescription coverage can also vary from one plan to another.
Review:
- Whether each medication is covered
- Drug tiers
- Copays or coinsurance
- Deductibles
- Prior authorization requirements
- Preferred pharmacies
Your medications may stay exactly the same while your coverage and costs change.
Could You Have Medicare Supplement Rights?
This is an important part of a plan termination or service area reduction.
If your Medicare Advantage plan leaves Medicare or stops providing coverage in your area, federal rules may give you guaranteed-issue rights for certain Medigap plans if you return to Original Medicare instead of joining another Medicare Advantage plan. Medicare says this window can begin 60 days before your Medicare Advantage coverage ends and extend up to 63 days afterward. State protections may provide additional rights.
Keep the letter showing that your current plan is ending. You may need it to document those rights.
What Should You Compare?
Don’t choose a new Medicare plan based only on the premium or extra benefits.
I recommend reviewing coverage in this order:
Doctors → Prescriptions → Hospitals → Medical Costs → Maximum Out-of-Pocket → Extra Benefits
Dental, vision, hearing, over-the-counter benefits and other extras can be valuable, but your core healthcare coverage should come first.
