The Medicare Advantage Trap: Why More Coverage Doesn't Always Mean Better Coverage

Medicare Advantage plans look great on paper. Low or zero premiums. Dental. Vision. Hearing. All the things Original Medicare doesn't cover. For a lot of people turning 65, these plans seem like a no-brainer.

But there's a catch.

The Trade-Off Nobody Talks About

Medicare Advantage plans aren't actually Medicare. They're private insurance plans that contract with Medicare to provide your benefits. The difference sounds small until you need care.

Original Medicare covers you at any hospital or doctor in the country, as long as they accept Medicare. No networks. Medicare Advantage has networks, and they can be restrictive. Your favorite doctor might not be in the plan. The nearest specialist might be an hour away. And if you travel outside the network area, you might have zero coverage except for emergencies.

The "extra benefits" are real, but they come with restrictions too. Dental coverage might have a $1,000 annual cap. Vision might cover an exam but not the glasses you actually want. These aren't oversights. They're built into the plan to keep costs down.

When Advantage Plans Go Wrong

Here's what we see happen. Someone enrolls in a Medicare Advantage plan because it felt affordable and comprehensive. Then they need a specialist. The referral takes weeks. The out-of-pocket costs add up fast. Or they move to see family for a few months and suddenly their plan doesn't work in that state.

By then, it's too late. If you enroll in Medicare Advantage and decide it's not working, federal law gives you one year to switch back to Original Medicare without medical underwriting. After that, if you want a Medigap policy (which pairs with Original Medicare), you might face health-based premiums or outright denial of coverage.

That's the trap. The plan that felt like the best deal becomes hard to leave.

The Real Question

This isn't an argument against Medicare Advantage. For some people, it's the right choice. But the decision should be based on your actual situation, not just the premium.

Ask yourself: Do I want to stay in network? Can I afford the out-of-pocket costs if I do? What happens if I move or travel? How important is the extra dental/vision coverage really?

If the answer is "I don't know," that's exactly the conversation you should have before enrolling.
